Whether you’re trying to lose weight, treat a particular condition or just make health a priority, we all know wellness starts with a healthy diet. Eating well can be a challenge however because it isn’t always convenient and requires time and effort. But long-term positive change is possible! It’s much easier to eat well if healthy food is conveniently available. Keep your fridge, pantry and freezer stocked with healthy food and you’ll be much less likely to consume unhealthy foods out of convenience or time restraints. Having good food available at home will make adhering to a healthy diet much more realistic and that starts at the grocery store!
Meal Prep Ahead of Time
Sometimes the hardest part of eating well is figuring out exactly what to eat and planning your meals ahead of time can get rid of a lot of the guess work. Take the time to figure out what you and your family will be eating for the week and develop a grocery list based on the meals and snacks you’ll be preparing. Look at what you’ve already got in your cupboards, pantry, freezer and fridge so you don’t miss anything and have to make a second trip, or alternatively buy too much and end up wasting food. Having this plan in place will make your grocery shopping much simpler!
Stick To Your List
How many times have you gone to the grocery store with a list in hand and ended up buying a bunch of things that weren’t on it? We’ve all been there! Most of us enter the grocery store with good intentions but give in to temptation when tasty treats are right in front of us. Make it a rule that you only buy things that are on your list and those temptations won’t be an issue. And if it’s not in your cart, it won’t be in your house or in your mouth later on!
Don’t Shop Hungry
You are much more likely to be tempted by unhealthy foods if you are already hungry when you do your grocery shopping. The best time to grocery shop is after you eat when your blood sugar is stable and you aren’t craving sugary and salty foods. Grocery stores are also generally busier before meals so your trips will become faster and easier if you do your shopping after mealtimes.
Keep To The Perimeter Of The Store
The more real food you can eat the better! Eliminating additives, preservatives, sugar, salt and other harmful substances becomes much easier when you eliminate processed foods. These foods are usually found in boxes and bags in the middle aisles. Fruits, vegetables, meats and plant proteins are generally found around the perimeter of the store and this should make up the majority of your shopping trip. This will ensure the majority of the food you bring into your home has the best nutritional quality possible.
Read Ingredients Labels
Ingredients such as sugar (link to sugar blog), salt, soy, corn, wheat, gluten (link to gluten blog), dairy (link to dairy blog) and other additives are often hidden in foods we think are healthy. Reading ingredients labels will allow you to know exactly what is in the food you’re eating and help you avoid any food intolerances that may be contributing to your health concerns. Pretty soon, you will learn which brands to buy and which ones to avoid to ensure the food you bring home is what you truly want to be feeding yourself and your family!
